Rebuilding a law firm's website around the way clients actually choose solicitors
A dated, slow website was quietly undermining a respected firm's credibility. A conversion-first rebuild more than doubled enquiry conversion — from the same traffic.
Client: Regional law firm
- enquiry conversion rate after relaunch
- +112%
- mobile load time
- 2.1s → 0.8s
- Lighthouse performance score
- 100/100
The situation
A well-established regional law firm — strong reputation, healthy referral pipeline, decades of good work — had a website that told a different story. Built years earlier and patched ever since, it loaded slowly, looked dated next to newer competitors, and buried its contact routes three clicks deep.
The partners' instinct was that the site "probably didn't matter much" because most work came through referrals. The data said otherwise: referred clients were checking the website before calling — and a measurable share of them were never calling at all.
What was holding them back
The audit found a compounding set of problems, none of them individually dramatic:
- Speed: 2.1 seconds to load on mobile, where most after-hours research happens. Every second of delay costs conversions — and this site was giving them away.
- Credibility gap: the firm's genuine strengths (specialisms, accreditations, decades of results) were either missing from the site or hidden on deep pages.
- No clear next step: the site had seven navigation items and no consistent call-to-action. Visitors who wanted to enquire had to work out how.
- Practice-area pages written for lawyers, not clients: dense paragraphs of legal terminology where a worried person wanted plain answers and reassurance.
What we did
Research first. We interviewed recent clients about how they'd chosen the firm, and reviewed which pages the enquiries that did arrive had touched. The pattern was consistent: people arrived on a practice-area page, looked for evidence they'd be in safe hands, and either found a reason to call — or left.
Architecture around decisions, not departments. Each practice area became a self-contained landing page: the client's problem in their words, the firm's approach in plain English, the relevant credentials beside the claim, and one clear action — repeated at every scroll depth.
A build with a speed budget. Hand-coded, no page-builder bloat, images optimised per device, fonts self-hosted. Performance was treated as a launch requirement, not a post-launch aspiration.
Proof, placed where doubt happens. Accreditations, review scores and anonymised outcomes moved from a forgotten "About" subpage to the decision points: next to CTAs and at the top of practice pages.
Measurement. Call tracking and form analytics wired in before launch, so "is the new site working?" would be a question with an answer.
The results
| Measure | Before | After |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile load time | 2.1s | 0.8s |
| Lighthouse performance | 61 | 100 |
| Enquiry conversion rate | baseline | +112% |
The traffic didn't change meaningfully in the first quarter — that was the point. The same visitors, arriving for the same reasons, converted at more than double the rate, because the site finally matched the quality of the firm behind it.
What made the difference
Not the redesign itself — the research before the redesign. Every layout and copy decision traced back to something a real client had said or done. Design taste is debatable; evidence isn't.
The service behind this result
Websites built to convert, not just to look good.
